TIPS

Strong Roots, Strong Hair

Everyone wants beautiful, vibrant and healthy hair.

But did you know the secret to strong hair literally lies at the roots?

Strong and healthy hair begins at the hair follicle, known as the hair root. Follicles are the tiny sacs found in the second layer of skin, the dermis of the scalp, and are responsible for producing hair and its overall health.

Healthy hair follicles are well-hydrated and nourished with nutrient rich blood from surrounding capillaries. Weak follicles are caused by a variety of reasons like dehydration, poor nutrients, and environmental damage.

In order to produce strong, healthy hair you not only have to focus on external care but internal care, as well.

What you’re eating plays a big role in the health of your hair. So eat foods that are rich in iron and protein, for example eggs, poultry and dairy. If you're on a plant-based diet, try adding tofu, legumes and leafy greens to your diet. Other vitamins and minerals that fortify hair follicles are vitamins A, B, C, and minerals zinc and collagen.

Drinking plenty of water goes hand-in-hand with maintaining a healthy diet. Increasing your water intake will ensure well hydrated follicles that will produce strong healthy strands of hair. As dehydrated follicles produce brittle, frizzy, and dull strands that eventually fall out.

As for external care, be gentle with your locks. Too much stress and pulling will put strain on the follicles, leading to inflammation and permanent damage. Brush hair gently and use a wide tooth comb to undo tangles. Try avoiding plastic combs and brushes as they are very harsh on the scalp and follicles. You can find combs and brushes made of natural products like wood or cow horn, in most natural health food retailers; they are much gentler.

Stay away from overusing heat tools like blow dryers and hot irons. Although this may seem odd, blow dry/style your hair after it has dried naturally. This will minimize the stripping of necessary natural, protective oils.

For beautiful, healthy hair, be mindful of the tools and products you use. Whenever possible, opt for natural sulfate-free shampoos, and avoid the over use of chemicals.  Overtime, hair care products build up on your hair and scalp leaving a thin, white coating that will suffocate your scalp, follicles and hair strands. You can remove this film using natural DIY remedies, like an apple cider vinegar cleanse. Then, nourish your follicles with a deep conditioner or a hair mask made from, ingredients found in your kitchen such as avocados, bananas and eggs.
